Historically, hypnosis was considered to be loss of consciousness or sleep, it is not. Generally experienced as restful and relaxing, in trance you are aware of your surroundings - you hear sounds, smell smells, are aware of movements, and you are fully in control of your actions, just as you are in your normal waking state.
Consciousness is not lost but becomes more selective.
In trance, you are more aware of your internal processes, and free from the outside world’s activities and distractions. In this altered state, you are able to be selective, allowing yourself to solve problems, or just enjoy the relaxation. It is not mind control! You are always in full command of your senses, and cannot be made to do anything that you don’t want to do.
We have all seen outlandish stage hypnotists who ‘appear’ to control the mind of a subject. His role is to make it look like mind control, for the purposes of entertainment - and it is only an illusion! The benefits of hypnosis in therapy are well established, and have been used to bring about beneficial changes for centuries. It is more widely used in the new millennium than ever before, across all walks of life.
